The Database

SIRS Discoverer ® Deluxe on the Web is an award-winning inter-active reference database for elementary and middle school-aged children, as well as for students with limited English at the high school level. This online resource is designed to develop research, reading, writing, language and computer skills. The database consists of full-text articles constructed from more than 1,200 magazines, newspapers and U. S. government documents.

Search Options

The interface offers a variety of search methods that enable novice and expert users to effectively fine-tune their searches. Search methods include:

Keyword Search pinpoints articles based upon the user's own combination of words. It offers phrase searching and natural language searching, in addition to logical operators (AND, OR, NOT) and truncation. Users can specify how they want the resulting article list to appear — in order of relevancy or in reverse chronological order. User's may also limit a search to particular reading levels or search by author or title.

Subject Tree places every article under one or more of 15 categories. Subject categories include: Animals, Arts, Countries, Cultures, Drugs and Alcohol, Environment, Health and Human Body, History and Government, Just for Fun, Notable People, Personal Growth, Science, Social Issues, Sports and Technology.

Subject Headings accesses articles indexed according to Library of Congress subject headings. Phrase searching, truncation and logical operators are also available.

Functional & Reference Aids

Summaries and bibliographic source information are available for all articles.

E-mail allows users to send full-text articles and source information to their personal e-mail addresses.

Dictionary/ Thesaurus assists users in defining words, checking spelling, choosing the correct word and more.

How to Cite provides examples of bibliographic citations.

Spotlight of the Month provides users with a monthly topic to encourage research and includes related articles chosen from Discoverer.

Student Workbooks and Educator's Guide are available for downloading in PDF (Portable Document Format).

Additional Content

The World Almanac ® for Kids offers information on topics such as animals, computers, geography, the solar system and much more. It can be searched by key word and through an electronic table of contents.

Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia includes more than 26,000 entries with information on science, people, sports, history and much more.

Country Facts outline information on the histor y, government and population of countries of the world, U. S. states and Canadian provinces and territories. Country Facts can be found in the Subject Tree under Countries, Country Facts (SIRS).

Biographies of notable people include U. S. presidents, world lead-ers, artists, scientists and sports figures. All Biographies are marked with a red "p" (People). Biographies can be found in the Subject Tree under Notable People, or by clicking the Biographies button below the Subject Tree categories.

Activities are available in many articles throughout the database. Activities include art projects, recipes, puzzles, quizzes, science projects and more. All articles that include an activity are marked with a red "a" (Activities). Activities can be found throughout the database, or by clicking the Activities button below the Subject Tree categories.

Thousands of Colorful Graphics accompany articles on the database. Graphics include photos, illustrations, maps and graphs. For a complete list of all the articles on the database that have graphics, click on the Graphics button below the Subject Tree categories. All articles with graphics are marked with a camera icon.

Keyword Search:
List key words or phrases related to your research topic. Key words or phrases may be linked by AND, OR or NOT. Phrases (two or more words) must be enclosed by quotation marks. Articles can be sorted by relevance or in reverse chronological order.

List several terms that may lead to information about your chosen topic. Remember to enclose phrases (two or more words) in quotation marks.
